The Pig Event on 13 November 2006 was held in the Convention Center (CC) at the Hanover fair. More than 200 participants took part in this event, which was jointly organised by the European Pig Producers Club (EPP) and the DLG (German Agricultural Society).
Following an official welcome by the EPP vice-president, Birgit Scharlau, from Germany, Andrew Cookson, Director of Gira Consultancy & Research from France, presented the topic of “Global criteria for the survival of the EU pig industry”.
Within the scope of the „Pig Event“ two outstanding pig producers were awarded with the “EuroTier Pig Farmer 2006” price. DLG president Carl-Albrecht Bartmer presented the certificates. The first price went to Friedrich Ahlers from Wildeshausen in Germany, the second to Aksel Kirketerp from Hjorring in Denmark. His award was accepted by his son Björn Kirketerp.
Friedrich Ahlers from Wildeshausen (Germany): „Low production costs, the health of the animals and the marketing by branded meat programmes are important aspects for me. I see good perspectives for pig fattening in closed systems in Germany. Low slaughtering costs and good export possibilities in East Europe are our big chances.”

Axel Kirketerp from Hjörring (Denmark): „Most important is that I have the right employees on my farm. The production should not be too complicated. The profit has to allow further investments here and abroad. The biggest challenge is, to explain the context between sausages and pig production to the consumer. I gladly see my future as a senior partner on the farm.”

A buffet following the event ensured that international networking and exchanges took place in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our EPP committee decided to promote and support young soon-to-be pig farmers in order to get new interested parties to join our international network. In this context the procurement of international trainees for EPP member-farms/companies plays an important role. Meanwhile thanks to the support of the German branch a young French student could gain insight into a future-oriented Westphalia pig keeping farm for five weeks. Adrien de Thoré, 20 years old, student at ESA in Angers, was able to particularly improve his German language skills during his stay at Markus Jeiler’s farm in Dülmen.
At this opportunity Adrien met an entrepreneur-family who presently set up a sow herd of approx. 600 sows and therewith achieved a consistent step towards the “closed system”. Particularly in the fields of feeding and management our EPP trainee learned a lot of interesting aspects which he can certainly use at home in the Brittany. Especially these personal experiences obtained through the EPP trainee exchange have advantages for all parties. The incurred contacts often evolve into international friendships. We will be happy to assist everyone who might be interested in finding a traineeship. However we can only provide the contact. All organisational concerns, like insurance cover etc. is everyone’s own responsibility.
Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
